Imitate God
Ephesians 5:1 (NLT) “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children.”
I think something that helps us walk with God is this scripture. If you are imitating Him, it is because you are in close association with Him. You look to Him. He is influencing your life.
That’s even true naturally. Because our children are around us so much, they pick up our habits, mannerisms, expressions, and so on. They not only look like us, but they also talk and act like us. God wants this for us as His dear children, so we should do it on purpose. We should know and follow His ways. To do that, we must think like Him and talk like Him.
Jesus said in John 13:15, “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
Remember when the disciples asked Jesus to show them the Father? Jesus was always talking about the Father and pointing to the Father. Finally, they said, “Show us the Father.” Jesus said, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father for the Father and I are one.”
They are not one in that they are the same person because Jesus prayed to the Father, and after His resurrection, He said, “I must go to the Father.” Jesus saying He was one with the Father was Him saying, “I act like the Father, I talk like the Father, I am imitating the Father, and I do what the Father would do in this situation.” That’s why Jesus said, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.”
That should be our goal, our aim. We should be able to say, “If you see me, a child of God, you can see what the Lord would do in this situation.”
Is that possible? Yes, if we will be an imitator of God.
Seem too much, too big? Yes, because it is. It’s not possible to do except by the Word and by the Holy Ghost. I didn’t say you were the Father, or you were God, but why else would He tell us to imitate Him? Why else would Jesus say, “Follow my example.”
I will leave you with this scripture. 1 John 2:6 says, “He that says he abides in him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.” If we abide in Him, and we should, we are to walk as He walked.
There is all this talk about walking with God, so it must really be important to Him! We are supposed to be His ambassadors on the Earth. We are His children, who He has made ambassadors, and we are to show the world through our words and actions who He is.
It is time to imitate Him!
