The Serpent on the Pole

Day 12 of At His Table draws a powerful connection between an Old Testament account and the finished work of Jesus on the cross. In Numbers 21, after the Israelites sinned and poisonous serpents entered the camp, God provided a way for them to live: anyone who looked steadfastly at the bronze serpent lifted on the pole would be restored.

Today's devotional shows how that moment was a shadow of something much greater to come. In John 3, Jesus Himself points back to the bronze serpent, explaining that the Son of Man would also be lifted up so that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. What the Israelites experienced temporarily pointed forward to what Christ would accomplish fully through His body and blood.

As you take communion today, consider what it means to turn your gaze toward Jesus and remember what He has provided through the cross. His sacrifice invites us into salvation, healing, restoration, and life. Day 12 encourages us not simply to glance toward Christ, but to keep our attention fixed on Him and the work He has already completed on our behalf.
