Alienated From the Life of God

Ephesians 4:18 “Having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart”

The Amplified Classic says it this way, “…[They are] alienated (estranged, self-banished) from the life of God [with no share in it; this is] because of the ignorance (the want of knowledge and perception, the willful blindness) that is deep-seated in them…”

The reason people are estranged from God is because they refuse His light. First, by rejecting the light, Jesus Christ; second, by refusing to acknowledge the Word is the truth and the life. I like the way the Amplified says it; they are self-banished. Every human being has the choice to believe that God is.

Darkness comes because people reject the light. A believer can reject light as well. Many believers only have a portion of light because of various reasons, like the traditions of men that make the Word of God of no effect. Religion will keep you away from the truth.

Even born-again believers are deceived by the god of this world and have blinders on in certain areas. People sit in darkness in some areas of their life and are bound by habits and chains. Not because it is not God’s will to set them free; it is because they have not acknowledged the truth in some area and sit in darkness.

But the truth, or the light, will make you free. The entrance of God’s Word and light into your heart gives you and me the ability to walk and live free. The life of God is not active in people’s lives because of ignorance of God’s Word, ignorance of His will and power in that area of their lives.

All people who sit in darkness need one thing: a great light; and that great light is Jesus and His Word. No one can use the excuse, “I didn’t know.” The truth is available equally to us all.
