The Blindness of Their Heart

Ephesians 4:18 “Having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart”

Most translations say, “the hardness of their heart.” The hardness of someone’s heart caused the blindness and the inability to participate in the life God intended and, therefore, receive the promises of God.

In Hebrews 4, we see the Children of Israel unable to enter into their promised land because of a hardness of their heart. Hebrews 3:15 says, “…Today if you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.”

It is our choice to have a hard heart or an open heart. God does not control the condition of your heart; only you and I can control that. These people, even after seeing the miracles God did for them to deliver them out of bondage, chose not to believe God when He told them He had given them the land.

Refusing to believe God, or to take Him at His Word, is hardness of heart. It causes spiritual blindness to come and, therefore, alienates us from the very life of God, which is the power of God. Receiving God’s Word as truth changes our ignorance into life and causes us to receive everything God has for us.

It seems it is our choice; will we walk in darkness or light? Will we walk in death or life? God said He set before us life and death, blessing and cursing, and He told us to choose life; or we could say, choose light.

Let’s make up our minds not to harden our hearts to God in any area of our lives. If He said it, He will do it. Let’s choose light and life!
