THAT WHICH IS OF THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM
Romans 4:16 (KJV)
“Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all.”
There appear to be two groups of people here: one who tries to come to God by the law, and another who comes through the avenue of faith. There is no combination. You are either of the law or you are of faith.
The law was given so that it could show us our need for a Savior. Today, you cannot have a relationship with the Lord through the law. You never could. The sacrifice of bulls and goats covered a person’s sins yearly, but it could never remove a guilty conscience. It did not make you a son or daughter, and it was not a permanent solution.
Jesus came so that He could bring the two covenants into one—so that Abraham could be the father of us all, and so that God could be the Father of us all. When you received Jesus, you were grafted into a family. Abraham became our father in the faith, and all the blessings that were given to him now belong to us.
In Romans 4, we see how Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. He was able to keep the line of Jesus going by believing that he and Sarah would have a son. Through their faith—because they chose to believe in someone—God was able to perform the impossible.
In Romans chapter 4, we can see a pattern of how to receive the impossible. Our father in the faith showed us how to believe and receive from God.
