He Is the Potter; We Are the Clay

Isaiah 64:8 “But now, Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; and we all are the work of your hand.”

When we look at one of the aspects of our Father, He is a Creator. God our Father created mankind, and He also created us individually for the good works we are responsible for.

The potter is the only one who creates the vessels he is making. All the creations come from the potter. The clay has no input. The clay makes no decision about what it is to be or what it will be used to do. The potter is the only one with the right and the ability to create the vessel and give it a purpose.

First, let us be clear, God doesn’t create junk or things of no value, and He doesn’t create anyone to be in disobedience to His Word. He didn’t make anyone to be in opposition to Him. When Paul said, “I am who I am by the grace of God” (1 Corinthians 15:10), in context, Paul was referring to the call of God, or the purpose of his life. So, this scripture used for any other reason is being misused or is misplaced.

Correctly interpreted, “You are who you are by the grace of God,” has to do with what the Potter has made you to be and do for the Kingdom of God. Who are you? The answer is in the Potter’s heart. He made you; He shaped you; He called you in your mother’s womb before you did anything right or wrong. You should check in with your Heavenly Father and ask Him what He created you to do.

I often tell the account of my exercise bike that I used to have in my bedroom. The designed purpose of an exercise bike is to ride, so I can get some good cardio in. This exercise bike did not get used for its intended design for very long. Suddenly, it took on a new role as a clothes rack, and before long, it was draped with my clothes. It worked for that purpose, but that was not the designer’s, potter’s purpose.

So many people are not doing what the Potter designed them to do. They function, and it seems to work, but it is not their highest and best. Find out what the Father, our Potter, designed you for. Ask Him, and He will let you know. Then, set about becoming that chosen vessel fit for the Master’s use.

Find your highest purpose in life and then glorify God with your life. You are a chosen vessel created to do great and wonderful things for our Creator, our Potter.
