Be Fruitful in Every Good Work

Colossians 1:9-10 (NASB1995) “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”

The Holy Spirit gave us this prayer through the Apostle Paul. The will of God is so important for our lives, and the Holy Spirit wants us to be filled with the knowledge of His will. We need to understand some things and have wisdom on how to bring the plan and will of God to pass in our lives. We can and should pray this prayer over ourselves, and we can also pray this prayer over others.

What are we trying to get to? What is the result of praying this prayer? That we would walk worthy, that our conduct would please the Lord, and that we would be pleasing to the Lord. Although He loves us unconditionally, He can be more or less pleased with us in certain matters. That we would increase in our knowledge. We need to be ever growing in the Word of God and in our knowledge of Him.

The one we are concentrating on is that we would be fruitful in every good work. The fruit that this Word is referring to has to be what we are doing for the Lord, what we are doing to serve first the Body of Christ, and then ministering to others. And we know this: He is the vine, we are the branches, and if we are going to produce fruit that remains, we are going to have to do it by the serving grace He gives us.

When we do things unto the Lord, we are producing fruit. That is very important to the Lord, and He makes it equal with walking worthy, pleasing Him, and that you would grow in knowledge. I think so many people, especially in our current culture, believe serving God is an option, a request from the Lord if you can get around to it or if you have time. The truth, however, is far different.

We have been given a function in the Body of Christ, and He needs everyone to take their place so we can get to the fullness. Producing fruit is not really an option. Producing fruit is not something we do if it is convenient, but something we should be doing continuously. Remember the fig tree and the Master wanting fruit on His trees? You are the tree, so let’s produce some good fruit for the One who gave us everything.
