Snow White Syndrome
Psalm 100:2 (KJV)
“Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”
When I think of Snow White, I am recalling the original Disney cartoon version from 1937. One of the themes that played out—besides good triumphing over evil—was joy while you work. Whether it was Snow White and her merry little tune of “Just whistle while you work” or the Seven Dwarfs “Hi Ho”-ing on their way to work, we were being shown that work was meant to be done with a good attitude to produce a job well done.
This reminds me of our verse today, which states we are to serve the Lord with gladness. I don’t know about you, but the word serve has a connotation of work to me. If you are serving, you are doing something other than just sitting and relaxing. This verse is showing us that we are to be serving the Lord—allowing Him to assign us tasks that He knows need to be done.
Many are serving the Lord, but are we fulfilling the second part of the verse and “whistling while we work”? Or do we have a bad attitude, weary and with no song in our heart?
The Lord wants our song back—not the “Blues” or “I’m Working on the Chain Gang” version—but a merry little tune as we serve Him with gladness!
So, Hi Ho, it’s off to work we go!
