The Holy Spirit, Our Advocate
John 14:16–17 (NIV)
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”
When Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He didn’t leave them with fear — He left them with a promise. He said, “I will not leave you as orphans.” Instead, He promised the coming of another Advocate — the Holy Spirit.
The Greek word Jesus used is parakletos, which means “one who comes alongside to help, to comfort, to speak on behalf of another.” In the ancient world, a paraklete was someone who stood beside you in court, defending your cause when you couldn’t speak for yourself.
That is what the Holy Spirit does for us. He speaks and stands up for me.
When guilt whispers that we are too broken for God to love, the Spirit steps in as our Advocate, reminding us that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1) When we feel alone, unsure of which way to go, the Spirit advocates for us by guiding us into the truth — Himself being the Spirit of Truth (John 16:13). And when we don’t know what to pray for, “the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26)
The Holy Spirit is not a distant force — He is a divine Person who walks beside us, speaks within us, and stands for us. He is the continuing presence of Jesus — our Comforter, Counselor, and Defender.
So today, take heart. You are not alone in your struggles, not abandoned in your weaknesses, not without a voice in heaven. The Advocate, Jesus said, would be with you and in you. And as long as He lives in you, heaven’s defense never rests.
