BE FILLED
Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.
The prayers of a righteous man make tremendous power available (James 5:16), so we can pray for others and ourselves. One of the best ways to pray is by scripture and to follow scripture. Here, in our verse, the Holy Ghost tells us, through Paul, that we should not cease to pray for people. How do we do that? By being led and reminded by the Spirit, praying the Word of God over people, and praying in other tongues for people. What are we supposed to pray? That the person you are praying for would be filled with the knowledge of His will (Colossians 1:9). The Amplified Classic says, “…that you may be filled with the full (deep and clear) knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [in comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God]…” We personally need wisdom so we can pray this over ourselves, but we are to pray this over others also. Who needs this? Everyone, but especially when I think of people making vital decisions about their life and the life choices they make, they need the wisdom of God.
We know James says that if any man lack wisdom, let Him ask of God. We can ask for ourselves and we should; but some people don’t ask, and they need the wisdom of God desperately. We can help them by praying for them in this very scriptural and specific way. People need knowledge of God’s will. They need His Word, and they need His direction for their lives. They need wisdom, and the ability to apply the knowledge they have received from God. Many people are making bad decisions in life, and you and I can help them through prayer.
I also believe that whatever you sow, you also reap. So, when you sow knowledge and wisdom in prayer for people, you will reap it. The Amplified Classic finishes Colossians 1:9 this way, “…and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things.” When we pray for people, we bring a supply of the Spirit through our prayers (Philippians 1:19). People in our lives who are making very bad decisions need our help, and the greatest way we can help them is to pray this very specific Holy Ghost-given prayer for them. They need understanding and discernment of spiritual things. I think that also points to the ability of the Holy Spirit to show them things to come by the decisions they are making. Our prayers, which are powerful, make a supply of the Spirit available to them and gives them access, if they will take it, into the realm of the Spirit.
The Lord is so kind and merciful that when people we love are not on the right path or not making the right decisions, our prayers can bring them back around. When we pray, we give God access to give them knowledge of His will and to give them wisdom and spiritual understanding. Receive all this for yourself and then pray this for others.
