HOW TO GET WATER OUT OF A ROCK
Exodus 17:6; Numbers 20:8 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak you unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
These two scriptures reflect two different times in the life of Moses. It is the same problem in that the people are complaining because there is no water to drink for them or their livestock. The Lord had two different solutions to the same problem. Two very distinct strategies.
Both were very clearly spoken to Moses. He was to strike the rock the first time and speak to the rock the second time. Now, we know this is a type that the Lord was trying to give us of Jesus on the cross; He was to be “struck” once, which was for all of us. So, Moses messed up the type, and it cost him going into the promised land. Even though after he struck the rock the second time it still produced water for the people, it was not God’s plan.
My point to you is what are you trying to repeat? The last time you needed something you did thus and so because the Lord gave you that instruction. Moses was so angry out of frustration that he struck the rock. Are you frustrated? Are you frustrated at God? I know you know this, but God is obviously not your problem. Moses was mad at the people, and it cost him.
We must get rid of all frustration. One way to do that, if you have not seen your answer come, is to go back to the Lord and ask Him, “Did I miss some instruction somewhere?”
I want to remind you of King David; he had much success with the Philistines, not only Goliath, but any time they raised their ugly head, David and his army put them on the run. Do you remember the episode at Ziklag (1 Samuel 30)? After the Philistines destroyed their camp, took their wives, children, and all their stuff, David did not just immediately collect his men and go after them. He asked for the ephod, and then he enquired of the Lord what to do and that’s when the Lord said, “Pursue, overtake, and recover all!”
I would call that a Rhema word from God. We must find out the plan of attack from the Lord. Yes, the written Word of God always has power, but while you’re speaking the general will of God from your heart and mouth, the Lord may give you a Rhema, a word from the Word, and He may want to give you the exact battle plan.
Ask HIM!
