The Riven Side

Day 23 of At His Table focuses on the riven—or violently torn—side of Jesus and the extraordinary events surrounding His death. When Christ's side was pierced, blood and water flowed. At the same time, something significant happened in the temple: the veil separating people from the presence of God was torn from top to bottom.

Today's devotional explores what that torn veil means for us. Under the old covenant, access to God's presence was restricted, with the high priest entering the Holy of Holies only once a year. But through Jesus' sacrifice, a “new and living way” was opened. The barrier was removed. Because of Christ's body and blood, we are no longer strangers standing at a distance—we have been given direct access to the Father.

As you take communion today, remember that Jesus' sacrifice accomplished more than forgiveness. He made a way for you to draw near to God, speak with Him, and enjoy fellowship with Him as His child. Day 23 invites us to appreciate an incredible privilege we can easily take for granted: because of Jesus, the way to the Father is open.
