Leaders Serve

Luke 22:26 (NLT) “But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.”

Jesus had just told the disciples that one of them was going to betray Him. As they were discussing who it would be, they also began to talk about who was going to be the greatest among them. That’s when Jesus began to teach them about how things worked in the Kingdom of God. It is not the same as the world. He doesn’t operate His Kingdom like the devil has influenced the world to operate.

In the world, those with the highest position, most money, and greatest titles are considered the people who are important and should be respected and served; but Jesus said in His Kingdom, it was different. If you want to be greatest in His Kingdom, you have to be like Him and be a servant.

I really like the term “servant leadership” for the Body of Christ. It puts the right word first; it puts the emphasis where Jesus put the emphasis. The more of a leader you are in the Body of Christ, the more of a servant you should be.

It is true that leaders in the Body of Christ should be served or helped because there is no pastor or leader over a ministry who can do everything on their own. They must have the ministry of helps, which is the predominant ministry and probably the most important ministry in the Body of Christ. As people help, they will serve the leader, but a true biblical leader will not demand to be served.

The Lord will have joined people’s hearts with the leader, and they will serve the leader unto the Lord. In other words, everything they do will be done for the Lord, and everyone has a different service to do unto the Lord. If everyone would do what the Lord has ordained and gifted them to do, all the work in the Body of Christ would be done with great excellence.

Let’s ask the Lord to give us the same heart and love that Jesus had, the heart of a servant. With the heart of a servant and the love that is already in you, let’s serve one another.
