SEEK THAT WHICH IS ABOVE
Colossians 3:1–2 (KJV)
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Ephesians 2:6 says, “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” When Jesus was raised from the dead, He was seated at God’s right hand far above all principality, power, might, and dominion. When Jesus was raised from the dead, we were raised with Him.
You were once dead in sins and trespasses, but when you believed in Jesus, you were made alive unto God. With that free gift also came a seat—a seat of authority in the heavenly realm. You are seated in Christ Jesus, and that seat matters. A seat denotes a place to rule and reign from. Jesus came to restore the seat Adam lost and place us over the enemy, not under him.
We are always seeking something. We all have our attention on something—you could call it focus. What are you focused on? Where you focus is where you will end up. Scripture tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God, to seek His face, and to look unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.
If you seek something, it becomes your priority—not what is left over. When you seek those things which are above, the things of God are first in your life. They are not optional or secondary. God receives your first and your best, not your leftovers.
This verse also tells us to set our affection on things above. That means focusing your mind on eternal things and not getting stuck in low-level thinking about temporary things on the earth. Our attention must be fixed on Jesus. If we don’t look to Him, we will faint.
There are many necessary things in life that demand our attention, but first things must stay first. If we seek the Kingdom of God, He will add what we need. The Word of God must be our priority. If we live from it and walk in the Spirit, we will navigate these days successfully and help others do the same.
The only way to truly be a blessing is to be heavenly minded—not in a strange way, but by living the Word, walking in the Spirit, and keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.
