THE VIRGIN BIRTH

Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

The virgin birth is one of the most important parts of our salvation. Without Jesus being born of a virgin, we would not be saved from our sins. This cannot be up for debate. Let’s look at it so we can esteem it.

Before Jesus came to earth, He was the Word of God. John 1:14 says He was the Word of God made flesh. In 1 John 5:7, it says that there were three in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost. John 1:14 says that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. The Word of God says He was found in fashion as a man, or became a man (Philippians 2:8). Jesus became a man, but how and why? It was through the virgin birth.

First, the virgin birth was prophesied in Isaiah 7:14. Isaiah 9:6–7 starts out with, “For unto us a child is born.” The verse goes on to describe who Jesus is and what He will do. From prophecy and even from the Genesis account, God spoke to the devil and told him that through a woman someone was coming, and that the devil may bruise His heel, but the offspring of the woman would crush the devil’s head.

What is the importance of the virgin birth? Is it essential to salvation to believe it? It is not the first thing you need to believe to be born again. You must believe Jesus was raised from the dead. However, the virgin birth is vital to our salvation because if Jesus were born of a natural father, He would have inherited the Adamic nature of the human race, which was fallen, so Jesus’ death would not have been a substitutionary death.

Jesus was all God and all man. Denial of the virgin birth is to deny the deity of Jesus. He is the only begotten Son of God (John 1:14; John 3:16; 1 John 4:9). However, He is the first begotten Son from the dead, not the only one.

When you think about all the Father went through to redeem us, and how the spotless Lamb of God—who is God and is the Word of God—came and became a man so He could redeem us from our sins, it is nothing short of amazing, outrageous, stupendous, and just flat out wow!

Let’s celebrate the virgin birth of our Lord this Christmas season. He is the reason for the season. Try to bring in the virgin birth as we celebrate Jesus. This Christmas Eve, come to church and let’s honor the One we celebrate!
