SUPERNATURAL SPECTACULAR SHOW
Luke 2:13–14 (KJV)
“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
One thing the birth of Jesus was not was a quiet entry into the earth. His entry came with a supernatural show. Everything God does is supernatural, but it is not always spectacular. This was spectacular!
It started with prophecies throughout the Word of God—things such as the Savior being born in Bethlehem, that He would come out of Egypt, that He would be a Nazarite, and so many more things. Right before Jesus’ appearance on the earth, God started working in a family He had chosen. An angel appeared to Zacharias and told him about a son coming to him and Elisabeth, but Zacharias didn’t believe and was left unable to speak until John—the chosen one who would prepare the way of the Lord—would come.
John’s supernatural birth to a couple who were not able to have children was the beginning of what God was going to do to bring us our Savior. Next, we see another spectacular supernatural thing happen when Gabriel appears to Mary and tells her of God’s plan to use an ordinary girl to become the mother of the Messiah. The Holy Ghost overshadowed her, and she was then carrying the Son of God.
I like this next part a lot. Mary went to visit Elisabeth after Gabriel told Mary that Elisabeth had also conceived a son in her old age and that she was six months pregnant. I don’t know if Mary already knew this. I find it hard to believe that this was kept a secret among their family. Zacharias is not talking, and Elisabeth, who was not able to have children, is now pregnant. Then another supernatural thing happened: as soon as Mary said hello, Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost (during this dispensation only the prophets prophesied), and she spoke a confirming and foretelling word to her. I would think that would help the young girl Mary, who was carrying in her womb the Savior of the world.
Then, at the birth of Jesus, something very ordinary got them in position—the paying of taxes. Joseph had to go to Bethlehem to pay his taxes (the Lord knows when taxes are due). Then, because there were no accommodations, they found themselves in a barn with the animals and having to lay Jesus in a manger. Then a star appeared over that place. How spectacular is that? A star that the kings from the Orient had been following.
At the same time our verse is happening, an angel comes to some shepherds. This was spectacular when suddenly an angel shows up and says, “I bring you good tidings of joy, for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Then, right after that message, instead of one angel, suddenly a host of angels appeared, and they were in unison saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men.”
So all the shepherds went to see Jesus. You have all the kings with their loads of gifts in the small town of Bethlehem, with a star shining over it. It was not a quiet event. This was an announcement from Father God: “My Son has come to redeem you—all of you.”
God is still doing supernatural, spectacular things today. My prayer is that you experience something extraordinary from God this Christmas season. Merry Christmas!
