WE HEARD HIM OURSELVES!
John 4:41-42 And many more believed because of His own word; and said unto the woman, now we believe, not because of your saying for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.
This account is from the woman at the well. Jesus had an encounter with this woman as she was drawing water. It all started with Jesus asking her to get Him a drink. As they talked, the Word of Knowledge began to operate, and He talked to her about her five marriages and that the man she now lived with was not her husband. Then, they began to have a theological discussion because this woman really understood some stuff about the difference between what the Jews and the Samaritans believed. Worship was their main topic. Then, the woman said something about the coming Messiah, who is called the Christ. She said, “He is the one who is going to tell us all things.” Then, Jesus said to her, “I am the Messiah.” She now had a choice to believe what Jesus said. She chose to believe and then, went back to the city and gathered the people telling them, “I met a man that told me everything I ever did.” She boldly proclaimed, “Is this not the Christ?” This Samaritan, even without a covenant, was a woman preacher, proclaiming that Jesus is the Messiah. John 4:39 says, “And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on Him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that I ever did.” Still, there were some who did not believe until they heard from Jesus for themselves. This is the same exact thing that happened with Sarah, Abraham’s wife. She didn’t seem to be able to release her faith until she heard it for herself. In this case, some believed at the saying of the woman while others needed to hear it from the mouth of God.
Does this mean that some people won’t get it, even though the Word is being taught or preached? I don’t think so. What it does mean is that while the Word of God is being taught and preached, people’s spiritual eyes must be opened so they can get it. The Holy Spirit is the one who is the revealer of truth. It isn’t until something is a revelation to you that you begin to walk in it. Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes from hearing a Rhema Christos. What is that? Rhema is a word spoken. It is the Word of God spoken or received from the Lord into your heart. Christos is “anointing.” The anointing comes from anointed men and women of God. The Word itself has an anointing on it. When you speak it out of your mouth as you are learning, it should and will be anointed when you mix faith with it. You can’t have a Rhema without the logos. We need to hear from God. Yes, you hear from the written Word of God, but it has to become alive to you and not just head knowledge. You know when you believe something or not. You know when you got it. You know when you believe what you have heard. If you have to ask someone, “Do you think I am believing?” then the answer is, No.” If you believe God, you know it in your heart. You know you’ve got it! The Lord wants to speak to all of us by the person of the Holy Ghost. It’s that perception, that unction, that knowing that you know. Let God speak to you and let it come alive, so you can say with these Samaritans, “We believe because we have heard Him for ourselves.”
