TEACH ME TO DO YOUR WILL

Psalms 143:10 (KJV)
“Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.”

First, I think we must realize that the will of God for our lives is not automatically done. According to our Scripture, we must first be taught to do the will of God. We know the Word of God is the will of God, but then we also have to find out what His personal will is for our lives. I think step one is finding out the will of God. The Word of God is the will of God, and so we begin by reading and studying the written Word of God in order to find the will of God for our lives.

Romans 12:2 (BLB) says, “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” You and I are either being conformed to the will of this world, and therefore the devil, or we are being transformed by renewing our minds so we can know the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God for our lives. We need to know His will for our lives.

Paul, by the Holy Ghost, prayed for us to be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (Colossians 1:9). You can and must know His will in all areas of your life. That is where you start, but you cannot stop there. Why would the Scripture say, “Teach me to do thy will”? Because knowing His will is not enough. You also have to take the steps to do it.

Psalms 25:4–5 (NIV) says, “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are my God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” It says show me, teach me, guide me, and again, teach me. We have to get this. It is not enough to hear the will of God; that alone will not get you to the doing. Yes, you must hear, you must know, but if you are not taught to do the will of God, the hearing will have no value to you.

James says that if you hear the Word and never do it, you deceive yourself, and I know self-deception is really hard to get out of. When the Lord shows you His will in an area, whether it be from the Word or something personal, immediately ask Him, “How do I do that?” or “What do I do with that?” If there is no doing, there is no faith. If there is no faith, there is no power to bring it to pass. Lord, teach us to do your will.

As He teaches us to do His will and we actually do it, then He is able to lead us into the land of uprightness. What is the land of uprightness? It is a good land. It sounds like a land with green pastures and still waters. Teach me to do your will, O God!
