Serve One Another

John 13:5 “After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.”

During the account of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, we see Jesus leaving a legacy behind of what He wants from the Body of Christ, from those who claim to follow Him. John 13:13-15 says, “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”

In Philippians 2:7, the Word says that Jesus took upon Himself the form of a servant. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus said about Himself that He came to minister and not to be ministered to, and to give His life a ransom for many. Jesus talked about serving to His disciples on a very regular basis. He is our example of one who serves. When one of the last things He did was to wash the disciples’ feet, He was telling us how important this was to Him. He was also saying to His disciples that your flesh wants to be served and be recognized, but I want to show you My way; and My way is the one who serves is the one who is promotable. The one who serves is the greatest in the Kingdom of God.

Just like when Jesus was on the earth, He still needs our help to do what the Father wants done. In the miracles of the water to wine and the multiplication of the bread and fish, people were involved. The disciples’ obedience in these miracles was very important. There are people in our presence every Sunday morning and Wednesday night who need miracles, and your help or service to the Lord creates an atmosphere for them to receive a miracle. Jesus left us an example of serving. He involved the disciples in serving, and He wants you and me to serve others too.

Jesus even tells us of rewards that come to those who serve. In Matthew 10:42, He tells us that if we even give a child a drink of water in His name, we will be rewarded. So, it is not just spiritual things, but even natural things done in the name of the Lord that put us in line for Heavenly rewards.

Hebrews 6:10 says, “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.”

Let’s follow Jesus’ example and wash one another’s feet by serving one another. It is one of the greatest ways to show the love of God. When we serve one another, it creates an atmosphere for the miraculous. How awesome it would be that while you are serving someone from your heart, the Lord is able to intervene in their life and show forth His almightiness on their behalf. That would be reward enough, but it also puts you in line to receive Heavenly rewards as well.
